Designing the Future of Food Rituals
Contributed to the form-giving and experiential design of this internationally acclaimed speculative food project by bio-designer Malu Lücking, featured in CNN, DDW, What Design Can Do, and numerous design publications and events. My role focused on developing the futuristic tableware system that frames the microalgae dining experience. I designed the sculptural eating tools and 3D-printed resin casings that protect the edible agar gel while creating a distinctive visual identity for each microalgae species. The tableware references the extinct food sources these flavors evoke crab shells, mussel forms, floral structures bridging culinary memory with radical food futures through industrial design.

Reimagining 2050's Food System
Landless Food addresses the crisis of agro-biodiversity loss by reimagining our 2050 food system through locally cultivated microalgae that recreate vanishing flavors. Three microalgae species; Rhodomonas salina with intense crab notes, Tetraselmis chui evoking prawns and mussels, and Dunaliella salina offering floral spice, are grown on edible gel objects that can be harvested and consumed fresh after two weeks. The project transforms kitchens into laboratories, positioning microalgae as both a sustainable protein source and a vehicle for preserving cultural and spiritual connections to taste.

Form Meets Function in Speculative Gastronomy
The tableware design language balances the unfamiliar with the recognizable, creating eating vessels that challenge conventional dining experiences while remaining approachable through carefully considered ergonomics and ritual. Each utensil was engineered to enhance the sensory interaction scraping concentrated microalgae from gel substrates, manipulating forms that echo the original seafood textures, and staging moments of discovery within the meal. This collaboration between industrial design and bio-design garnered international recognition, positioning Landless Food as a provocative model for regenerative food systems.
